Banff 1902 - published 1994, introduction by David M Bertie
In 1746 an official visitor from England wrote of Banff that it was "a neat little town, consisting of two long streets and several short ones. There is also a Market Cross, close to which is a house of good entertainment kept by the Town Clerk....The town, I believe, lives chiefly by smuggling". The town moved on to become a major fishing port, though many 17th and 18th century buildings survived; and by the time of this map tourism was very important. This was helped by the railway, which is seen running close to the shore.
Our map includes an introduction to the history of Banff by David M Bertie, and there are also extracts from a contemporary Almanac, and a list of fishing boats registered in the port.
