Family Tree Maker 2008 has been completely rewritten and revised to allow some exciting new features and to keep up with modern standards in software design. For instance Family Tree Maker 2008 will now allow you to customise what appears on the main program screen and useful extras such as being able to select and display a photograph of the person you are working on this front screen.

This whole program has been designed for ease of use for beginners of family history but at the same time the experienced and expert users of Family Tree Maker will find that they have even more control of how their data is input and displayed.

You will also find as with many modern database programs that there is more than one way of displaying your data. For example you may view photographs attached to an individual on their family view screen or you may now see all the media (photographs, audio, video etc.) for everyone displayed in the new 'Media Screen' where you can further categorise photo and other media by grouping them as photos, documents, audio etc. and even create your own categories.

Upgrading to Family Tree Maker 2008 v2 from older additions
Existing users of Family Tree Maker will be pleased to know that their data may also be transferred into this new version. This is done via an import facility on the new program rather than automatically during the update as was the case with previous updates.

Note: This all new version of Family Tree Maker differs considerably from previous versions and the following limitations of the new program should be considered before updating.

1. Due to some of the exciting new features of this version some re-formatting of your data such as 'places' may be necessary. Some data records may not transfer across if they are found to be incompatible with the new program structure.

2. It is not possible to directly download an existing online tree from www.Ancestry.co.uk. However it is possible to export the tree as a Gedcom file from the internet but records, photographs and comments will be lost.

3. You may upload a tree once to www.Ancestry.co.uk but it is not possible to merge new changes made on your PC software with the uploaded tree at a later date. Likewise changes made to the tree online cannot be merged back into the file on your PC.

4. The importing of files from previous versions of Family Tree Maker doesn't import books or attached documents. There is a new online service for creation of books at Ancestry Press.

5. It is no longer possible to upload your family file to the Genealogy.com websites.

Users of earlier versions of Family Tree Maker may be confused about the origins of the program, so here is a quick potted version of its history.

Jan 1994 First version launched by Banner Blue Software
Oct 1994 Second version published by Banner Blue Software
May 1995 Banner Blue Software was acquired by Broderbund
Oct 1985 saw the launch of Family Tree Maker v3
Aug 1998 Broderbund acquired by The Learning Company and FTM v5 published
May 1999 The Learning Company was acquired by Mattel Incorporated and FTM v6 published.
Autumn 1999 Mattel formed Genealogy.com
April 2003 Genealogy.com was acquired by MyFamily.com and in the late Summer FTM v11 was published.
August 2004 MyFamily.com launched Family Tree Maker 2005 in the USA
October 2004 MyFamily.com will launch Family Tree Maker 2005 in the UK
Autumn 2005 My Family.com launched Family Tree Maker 2006 in the UK
August 2007 Ancestry.co.uk launches Family Tree Maker 2008 in the UK

This has got to be the best method of backing up your family history. It is so easy to use and the ample storage capacity means that you will be able to store all those valuable images of family, certificates and even those census returns you have been painstakingly downloading off the internet.

Remember floppy discs. Well this USB memory stick holds more data than 1500 floppies or almost as much as 3 CDs. However the real difference is the ease of use.
