Take a tour of Family Tree Maker 2008

At My History we always like to look at a program in great depth before just copying the publishers sales information and listing it for sale. The following section shows the many user screens of the program and a quick description of what they are used for.

Family Tree Maker 2008 comprises seven screens accessed with the buttons shown below. Some of the screens are further divided into two work areas by tabs near the top of the screen. Scroll down to see a view of each screen.

'Plan' Screen - 'New Tree' Tab

Start a new tree in this window or import an existing one. The top right pane shows the trees you have created or imported. It also indicates the current open tree.

'Plan' Screen - 'Current Tree' Tab

Manage your tree and tasks from here. Top section shows statistics for the current file. The bottom section shows any general or person specific tasks that have been set up.

'People' Screen - 'Family' Tab

This is one of the windows you will use most to add new people and amend existing ones. It is the equivalent of the ‘family view’ page in earlier editions of FTM. Click on either the father or mother in the bottom pane to bring up 2 - 4 generations of their pedigrees in the top pane. Use the icon and the icons to adjust the size or hide the side bars or the bottom ‘family view’ panes. You may also customise the right pane to show more or less details about a person.

'People' Screen - 'Person' Tab

This is the window/tab where you may:
  • Add and edit facts about people in your tree.
  • View timelines.
  • View relationships.
  • Add notes, photos and other multimedia.
  • Set up tasks specifically to do with this person.
To navigate up or down a generation select a new person in the pedigree chart at top of the screen or click on the green icon to the right of it to open a list of all the people in your tree.

'Places' Screen - 'Manage Places' Tab

This new feature of FTM 2008 will automatically link all your place names to an online mapping system. You will need to be online in order for it to link to Microsoft Virtual Earth tm. The list of place names is taken from the ‘Place or Description’ field in each of the facts in older versions of Family Tree Maker so some tidying up of your data may be required after importing a file into this all new version of the program.

'Media' Screen - 'Collection' Tab

Manage and categorise your photos, document images and other multimedia files here.

'Media' Screen - 'Detail' Tab

Work with media files to link them to people in your tree. Add notes and dates to individual pictures.

'Sources' Screen - 'Manage Sources' Tab

  • Create new and manage existing sources, source-citations and repositories
  • View a list all sources/source-citations
  • View all sources for a person
  • Link source-citations to one or more persons
  • Link images of certificates to sources
  • Add notes about a source

'Publish' Screen - 'Collection' Tab

Start in the left pane to choose a category and then click on a picture in the middle to reveal more about the selection in the right pane.

'Publish' Screen - 'Detail' Tab

Click on the detail tab to see the report for your selected person. Selecting a new person in the pedigree chart at top of the screen reformats the report.

'Web Search' Screen - 'Search' Tab

This is the window where you can manage your web searches for more information about your relatives The top pane acts like a small internet browser. The lower right pane allows you to copy text and images or even whole web pages prior to merging them to the notes or media of the selected relative.
