History of Family Tree Maker

OLD SERIES
Users of earlier versions of Family Tree Maker may be confused about the origins of the program, so we have produced a quick potted version of its history.
  • Jan 1994 First version launched by Banner Blue Software
  • Oct 1994 Second version published by Banner Blue Software
  • May 1995 Banner Blue Software was acquired by Broderbund
  • Oct 1985 saw the launch of Family Tree Maker v3
  • Aug 1998 Broderbund acquired by The Learning Company and Family Tree Maker v5 published
  • May 1999 The Learning Company was acquired by Mattel Incorporated and Family Tree maker v6 published.
  • Autumn 1999 Mattel formed Genealogy.com
  • April 2003 Genealogy.com was acquired by MyFamily.com and in the late Summer Family Tree Maker v11 was published.
  • August 2004 MyFamily.com launched FTM 2005 in the USA
  • October 2004 MyFamily.com launched FTM 2005 in the UK
  • September 2005 MyFamily.com launched FTM 2006 in the UK
  • September 2006 MyFamily.com launched FTM v16 in the USA
Version 16 was launched to correct two minor errors but it was only for customers in the USA. FTM 2006 and v16 were the last of the old series. The Family Tree Maker v2006 & v16 were the last of the traditional family view layout that just showed the parents and children on a single screen with their basic BMD details. The grandparents were also shown with names only on the same screen.

NEW SERIES
  • September 2007 Ancestry.co.uk launched Family Tree Maker 2008 UK edition in the UK (ver. 17)
  • September 2008 Ancestry.co.uk launched Family Tree Maker 2009 UK edition in the UK (ver. 18)
    • February 2009 Release of Service Pack 1 (build number 18.0.0.305) for FTM 2009
    • May 2009 Release of update to Service Pack 1 (build number 18.0.0.307) for FTM 2009
