About our Historical Trade Directories

You will find a complete list of all the trade directories we stock on this page. These directories will often indicate both a business address and a home address for people in business or professionals from shoe makers to solicitors and landlords of pubs, beer houses and Inns. They often also include a huge amount of extra information such as; details of towns and villages, times of coaches and delivery services etc.

History, Topography & Directory of Bedfordshire & Huntingdonshire 1862

Ref: BDF1862HUN

  -  Price:£10.00 (Including VAT at 20%)

The directory sections for the two counties are preceded by a section describing the History of England. The original book contained folded maps of the two counties. These have suffered some damage but are perfectly legible. The maps are too large to scan in one piece on an A3 scanner so have each been scanned as two overlapping tiles which have subsequently been stitched together. The folding and damage to the maps made it dificult to obtain perfect stitching so each map is presented on the CD as the two scanned tiles and the stitched version. The two Directory sections begin with historical and topographical information for the counties as a whole, followed by detailed entries for towns and villages within the counties. The volume is completed by an Appendix, Index to the Directory Sections and four pages of local advertisements.
Some of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process

The preface to the directory mentions that it covers the counties of Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire but the copy used had been published, by Kelly's, as Bedfordshire only. Other than the map the directory contains: Indexes; Bedfordshire Facts; Towns and Villages Directory; Private Residents Directory; Trades & Professional Directory; Advertisements.

A number of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a result of the way in which the original book was printed rather than the scanning process.

(NEW) Kelly's Directory of Buckinghamshire 1920

Ref: BKM1920KD

  -  Price:£11.00 (Including VAT at 20%)

The original, partially disbound, book used for scanning covers the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. The total size of the scanned images is more than can be fitted on one CD so the three counties have been published on separate CDs. The Advertisements section of the original book has been included on all three publications.

Unusually, the county map of Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire has survived though use over the years has resulted in tears/rucks, especially at the folds, making scanning difficult. The map has been scanned as six overlapping tiles.

This publication comprises: Indexes; Buckinghamshire Information; Towns and Villages Directory; Private Residents Directory; Trades Directory; Advertisements.

Some of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process. Some page corners appear clipped. This is a result of having to angle the page to compensate for skewed print.

Although the copy used for scanning is more or less disbound it is complete, though some of the pages are a litte warped and/or skew printed and suffer from ink bleed.

The directory contains a street plan of Manchester with street index (though a small section at the top left hand corner is missing) and a Map of the Manufacturing District around Manchester. The maps have each been scanned as two overlapping tiles, the warping of the paper making it impractical to try to stitch the scans together.

Ref: HEF1876LT

  -  Price:£7.94 (Including VAT at 20%)

The improvements of the present Edition will be found very considerable; the Statistical, Historical, and Antiquarian Notes interspersed throughout the work have been largely increased; indeed, so much new information has been introduced, that the work is more Topographic than it has hitherto been, while the most casual comparison will show that the Alphabetical Lists contain more names, and that the Classified Sections are far more developed, than the same portions of any work yet published for the County. The work is arranged in Alphabetical order, so far as the Parishes in the County are concerned; but a copious Index is given, by means of which the numerous Hamlets and the principal Farm-houses may be easily ascertained.

When we obtained the directory, the county map had suffered a major tear and significant creasing. The map is also slightly too large to scan in a single piece on an A3 scanner (whilst the majority of the county can be scanned in one, some detail at the edges of the map are cut off). In addition to scanning as much as possible of the map as a whole, therefore, it has also been scanned as overlapping tiles which have subsequently been stitched together (though a little imprefectly because of the creasing). All three scans plus the stitched version of the map have been included on the CD. Other than the map the directory contains: Indexes; Huntingdonshire Facts; Towns and Villages Directory; Private Residents Directory; Trades & Professional Directory; Advertisements.
A number of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a result of the way in which the original book was printed rather than the scanning process.

  -  Price:£12.00 (Including VAT at 20%)

This is an extremely comprehensive directory, giving occupations of the people listed as well as their addresses. In addition, the Appendix includes a wealth of fascinating detail about the area covered. In addition to Liverpool itself, the directory includes Bebington, Bidston, Birkenhead, Eastham (part), Liscard, New Brighton, Oxton, Rock Ferry, Seacombe, Tranmere and Wallasey.
The original directory had a map but, as is so often the case, this is missing from the disbound copy used for scanning. The size of the directory means that we have had to publish it over two CDs. The advertisement section in the original book has not been included as, even using two CDs, there is insufficient space.
On the first CD are Contents, Additions & Alterations; Subscribers to the Liverpool Exchange Newsroom; Numerical Directory (Inhabitants by Street); Trades & Professions Directory; Hotels, Inns & Taverns; Appendix & Addenda and on the second CD the Street Directory and the main Residents Directory.
Some of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process.

In addition to the maps, the directory contains: Advertisements; Post Office details; Appendix of alterations; Alphabetical Directory of Manchester & Salford; Classified Commercial Directory of Manchester & Salford; Lists of Country Manufacturers, Carriers, Coaches, Churches/Chapels & Institutional Officers; Neighbourhood directories as detailed below; Alphabetical Directory for 24 miles around Manchester plus Preston & Runcorn; Lists of London & Provincial Bankers; 1821 Population Statistics for Lancashire, Cheshire & The High Peak Hundred of Derbyshire; Fairs in Lancashire & the Cheshire towns in the directory; Distances between Lancashire & Cheshire market towns.
There are two gaps in page numbering, pp 169 to 188 and pp 292 to 296 inclusive, which occurred in the original directory. There are no missing pages.
In general, the entry for each of the places listed below includes Post Office details; Alphabetical Trades & Professions Directory and (for the larger towns) Carrier details & Coach details.

igot's 1830 Directory was originally produced as a single publication covering the whole country. Over the years many copies became disbound and pages were lost. We obtained a re-bound copy of the pages for the counties of Norfolk and Northamptonshire (including the maps). This accounts for the page numbers being 527 to 632, rather than starting at 1.
The Directory for Norfolk covers Attleburgh (with Great & Little Ellingham); Aylesham & Cawston; Buckenham (New & Old); Burnham Market, North & South Creake; Cley & Blakeney; Cromer; Diss; Docking, Heacham & Snettisham; Downham; East Dereham (with Elmham, Shipdham, Swanton, & Yaxham); Fakenham & Hempton; Foulsham; Harleston (with Reddenhall); Harling (East & West) & Kenninghall (with North & South Lopham); Hingham; Holt & Letheringsett; Lynn Regis & Castle Rising; North Walsham & Worstead; Norwich; Reepham (with Hackford, Kerdiston & Whitwell); Stoke Ferry (with Feltwell, Methwold, Mundford & Northwold; Swaffham & Castle Acre; Thetford; Walsingham (Great & Little) & Hindringham; Watton; Wells; Wymondham and Yarmouth (with Caistor, Gorleston & South-Town).

White's 1854 Directory of Norfolk & Norwich

White's 1854 Directory of Norfolk & Norwich

Ref: NFK1854WW

  -  Price:£7.94 (Including VAT at 20%)

The plan of the work embraces a general history and description of Norfolk, and the City and County of the City of Norwich ; and contains the spirit of all that has been previously written on the subject, extracted from ancient and modern authors, and from the voluminous parliamentary reports of Public Charities, Population, &c.; together, with a variety of Agricultural, Commercial, Statistical, Biographical, and Topographical Information ; and comprehending a Survey of Antiquities, Roads, Rivers, Ports, Railroads, Public Buildings, Charities, County Courts, Pour Law Unions, and Civil and Ecclesiastical Jurisdictions. The Topography of the county commences with East Norfolk, at page 329, and contains an alphabetical arrangement of the Hundreds and Parishes in their respective Divisions : shewing the situation, extent, and population of the boroughs, towns, villages, and extra-parochial liberties; the owners of the soil, and lords of the manors: the nature and value of the church livings, with their patrons and incumbents: the places of worship, public buildings, institutions, and charities, trade and commerce: local occurrences, and objects of interest and curiosity. Each parish is followed by the addresses of the gentry and other principal residents, with a classification of trades and professions. The Directory of Norwich, in addition to a classification of trades and professions, is accompanied by an alphabetical list of persons; so that the address and occupation of any individual may instantly be referred to ; and the whole is preceded by a copious index of places, persons, and subjects, affording an easy reference to the page at which every parish and village is to be found ; thus giving to the volume all the advantage of an alphabetical gazetteer.

The size of the directory means that it is published as a 2 CD set. The first CD contains the Almanac pages and the North Shields, South Shields, Jarrow and Sunderland sections. The second CD contains the Newcastle, Gateshead and Advertisement sections. The indexes to the various sections and to the advertisements are included on both CDs.

The original maps are printed on folded card which has resulted in some damage along the folds (especially the Newcastle map) and ridging to some pages which shows up as a shadow on the scans.
A number of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process.
The contents include maps of: North Shields, South Shields, Sunderland, Newcastle and Gateshead.

The missing section comprised the General History of Nottinghamshire. The remainder of the directory (720 scanned images in total) is complete and comprises: History of the Town and County of the Town of Nottingham; Directory of Nottingham (including Radford & Sneinton Parishes); Gazetteers & Directories of each of the Parishes in each Hundred of the County (including major towns: Mansfield, Newark, Retford, Worksop).

The book used for scanning is fragile with a number of skew printed pages; the title page and pages 1 & 2 have been torn out and there are also tears on a number of other pages. The result is minor textual loss but all information is readable. Unusually for a directory of this age the county map has survived, though it too was torn along its folds and has been repaired.
Despite these problems the directory is complete and includes "every city, town and principal village" in the county. There are also lists of UK Bankers and 22 pages of advertisements.
Some of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process.

Francis White's Directory of Nottinghamshire 1864

The History of each parish is followed by a Directory, containing the names, and addresses of the principal inhabitants. No expense has been spared in collecting this information, experienced agents having visited every house and place of business throughout the county, and the information so collected has been compiled with the greatest attention.

A note from the publisher.
This directory was found in a very sorry state...hardly recognisable as a book! No covers, most of the pages loose and the binding all but gone. Many pages are dirty, torn & very poor. We are amazed at the quality we have been able to achieve in scanning and with a little work to the images we have produced a facsimile CD-Book that is 100% readable - and of a excellent reproduction quality.

Unusually, the county map of Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire has survived though use over the years has resulted in tears/rucks, especially at the folds, making scanning difficult. The map has been scanned as six overlapping tiles.
This publication comprises: Indexes; Oxfordshire Information; Towns and Villages Directory; Private Residents Directory; Trades Directory; Advertisements.

The remainder of the book is complete and comprises: Indexes; Warwickshire Information; Towns and Villages Directory; Court Directory; Trades Directory; Advertisements.

The copy used for scanning is more or less disbound with some of the pages being a little warped and/or skew printed and/or suffering from fading or ink bleed - though all are legible. A small piece has been cut out of the Index to Places at some time and the bottom corner of the preface page has been torn off, removing part of the advertisement printed there. As with many of these directories, the map which originally accompanied it is missing. Otherwise the directory is complete.
In some cases a section begins part way down a page. Where that occurs the page is included in both sections on the CD.
The size of the directory is such that we have had to publish it over two CDs. The introductory Advertisement, Preface and Index pages and the Appendix, Errata & List of Council Members from the end of the main directory are included on both CDs. Otherwise the contents are as detailed below.
CD 1 contains the Sheffield Directories and the Advertisement pages.
CD 2 contains the directories for Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Yorkshire towns & villages, Nottinghamshire towns & villages, Lincolnshire (Gainsborough) and Derbyshire towns & villages.
