Family Tree Maker 2017 Latest Update and FAQs

Family Tree Maker 2017 Latest Update and FAQs

Ref: FTM-FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about Family Tree Maker:

1) Why has my Family Tree Maker stopped synchronising with Ancestry?
Many customers are asking about the synchronisation of their family tree files from their computer to the Ancestry.co.uk online service. Most users will be aware that Ancestry wrote to their Family Tree Maker user base at the end of 2015 explaining that they were going to discontinue sales and support of the software. Furthermore they would stop the synchronisation process in early 2017. The good news is that the customer base was not happy with that idea and the company that had already written the FTM for Mac software expressed an interest in taking on the Windows version as well. That company is Software MacKiev and they have now published Family Tree Maker 2017.

2) Who are Software MacKiev and what are they doing with Family Tree Maker?
As well as making the old FTM2014 a lot more trouble free Software MacKiev have had to work with Ancestry to come up with a new version (FTM2017) and a synchronisation process that can cope with many more users than previously. This only affects users who are making use of the online trees or using it to look up new records via the shaking leaves on existing people that have been entered into the software. The story behind the need to stop the synchronisation in the FTM 2014 edition is complicated but we believe it was to do with the number of users trying to update their tree at any one time was causing problems. However the good news is, the latest edition of the software FTM2017 has a new methodology underpinning the synchronisation process. Even better news is, that the new system (due to popular demand) now allows two different people to synchronise the tree on their computer to the same tree on Ancestry.
