Maps of London 1881 to Circa 1932

Maps of London 1881 to Circa 1932

Ref: LDN1881MAP

(Supplied on a CD) The 1881 map is Phillips' Map of London and is complete with a Street Index and Guide. The scale of the original is just under 3.5 inches to the mile. Coverage is from St John's Wood in the north west and Fulham in the south west to Hackney Wick in the north east and Deptford New Town in the south east. Accompanying this map is a 26 page Guide to London, including a Street Index and a Sketch Map showing Public Buildings, Exhibitions &c. The map had been torn horizontally along its central fold when we obtained it and there are some other tears on folds with minor loss of detail.

The 1897 map was "Drawn & Engraved Expressly for the Post Office Directory" at a scale of 4 inches to the mile. Coverage is from Child's Hill in the north west and Fulham in the south west to Leyton in the north east and Greenwich in the south east. There is some minor loss of detail where damage has occurred along folds.

The Circa 1903 map is Bennet's Illustrated Plan of London, which contains two maps. There is a central plan from Regent's Park in the north west and Kensington High Street in the south west to Shoreditch in the north east and Tower Bridge in the south east. This is complemented by a larger map, at an original scale of about 2.5 inches to the mile, covering from Hampstead Heath in the north west and Chelsea in the south west to Hackney Marsh in the north east and Deptford in the south east. Printed on the reverse are Illustrations, lists of Places of Interest and Advertisements. The map has been torn and repaired on the reverse with black gummed paper which has led to minor loss of detail on the maps but somewhat more of the reverse details. It has been dated using the railways - it shows Angel station (opened 17 November 1901) but not the line from Moorgate to Finsbury Park (opened 14 February 1904).

The 1914 map is another "Drawn & Engraved Expressly for the Post Office Directory" at the same scale and with the same coverage as the 1897 map. There is some minor loss of detail where damage has occurred along folds.

The circa 1916 map is Phillips' Tape Indicator Map of London. This bears an inscription dated 1923 on the inside of the front cover but the railways shown indicate an earlier date. The original scale is about 3 inches to the mile. Coverage is from Willesden in the north west and Barnes Common in the south west to Hackney Wick in the north east and New Cross in the south east. The map is accompanied by a 72 page list of Streets & Places of Interest covered.

The circa 1924 map is The Pictorial Plan of London published by Geographia (1923) Ltd. The railways shown indicate an early date for the company as Moorgate Station is still shown as Moorgate Street (it was renamed on 24th October 1924). The original scale is about 3 inches to the mile. Coverage is from Kensal Rise in the north west and Fulham in the south west to Bethnal Green in the north east and Burgess Park in the south east. The southern corners are taken up with inset plans of Clubland and Theatreland.

The Circa 1932 map is Bacon's Up-to-Date Map of London (Central Sheet) at an original scale of 4 inches to the mile. Coverage is from Gladstone Park in the north west and Putney in the south west to Clapton in the north east and New Cross in the south east. The map was originally accompanied by a Strangers' Guide to London but this had been lost when we obtained it, apart from the first page which mentions the census population figures from 1921 and the London rateable value for 1927. Dating using the railways shown indicates that it may be a little later but before 31st October 1932 when Gillespie Road Station was renamed to Arsenal (Highbury Hill). There is some minor loss of detail where damage has occurred along folds and been repaired with tape.
