What is an Hourglass Chart?

An hourglass chart shows a single (root) person along with their siblings. Above the root person are their parents and other ancestors. Below the root person will be their descendants.

A hourglass chart will show the root person and any number of generations up and down your tree depending on what size of chart you choose. Be careful when counting generations up and down to include the generation of the root person.

This is a typical Hourglass chart.

An hourglass chart does not include: The descendants of the siblings of the root person. The siblings of the parents or siblings of the other ancestors of the root person. The relatives of the spouse of the root person.
